A delegation from the Arab League visited East Turkistan from May 30 to June 2, 2023, according to Chinese state media Global Times. The delegation included officials from 16 countries including Algeria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. After the staged visit by the Chinese regime, the delegation stated that “allegations of genocide and religious persecution” of the Uyghur Muslims are “false”.
Undoubtedly, this visit is just another effort to prevent Muslims from standing up for the Uyghurs and a part of China’s disinformation campaign aimed at the Islamic World. In the past, the Chinese regime has invited Muslim scholars, academics, journalists and diplomats on staged visits to East Turkistan to discredit the reports of genocide and China’s war on Islam using the voices of Muslims. This time, the Arab League has taken on the same step to becoming complicit in China’s genocide and crimes against Islam and Uyghur Muslims.
In August 2022, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights published a report on the Uyghur human rights situation that stated “China may have committed international crimes, including crimes against humanity”. So far, legislatures of more than 7 countries have recognized China’s crimes and human rights violations against the Uyghurs as genocide and crimes against humanity. It is unfortunate that while many Western governments are standing up against the Uyghur Genocide, Muslim-majority countries are keeping silent and even discreding the reports of genocide. Today, the Chinese regime has turned a big part of the Islamic World into a propaganda ground through its massive disinformation machinery.
Executive Director Abdulhakim Idris said, “the Chinese regime is working hard to deceive the Islamic World. The Chinese regime is extremely cautious of Muslims standing up for their Uyghur brothers and sisters. We call on the Muslims to not be fooled by Chinese disinformation and disappoint the Uyghurs who are fighting for their freedom, human rights and democracy. While the Uyghur Muslims are being persecuted, tortured and murdered by the Chinese communist regime, the Muslims should not keep silent let alone support China. The Muslim diplomats that visited East Turkistan should be wary of becoming the mouthpiece of the CCP.”
The Center for Uyghur Studies calls on the Arab League to reject China’s disinformation efforts. As an important international entity that brings together the Arab world, the Arab League is obligated to condemn China’s genocide and religious persecution of the Uyghur and other Turkic Muslims in East Turkistan.
