Uyghur activist Rushan Abbas has traveled the world to seek the truth about her “vanished” sister in East Turkistan.
That journey – its successes and challenges – are vividly reported in the documentary In Search of My Sister. When she vanished in 2018, the “Sister” of the title was a mid-50s retired physician. She is one of an estimated two-to-three million Uyghur Muslims taken into custody by the Chinese Communist Party. Abbas has advocated for the Uyghur cause for the past three decades and has been working tirelessly to reveal the genocide hidden by China’s communist regime. From cofounding the first Uyghur academic association in the United States to working with members of Congress to help advance human rights, Abbas’ commitment to revealing the truth of the missing and the perished is made evident in director Jawad Mir’s documentary: In Search of My Sister.
