CUS Convenes Conference on Uyghur Human Rights and Geopolitics in Ankara, Türkiye

On April 27, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, the Center for Uyghur Studies (CUS) convened a conference titled “Uyghur Turks in the World and Human Rights Violations Against Uyghur Turks in Asia.” The event brought together Turkish academics, civil society leaders, and community representatives to examine the current situation of the Uyghur people and broader regional dynamics.

Opening remarks were delivered by Abdureshid Abdulhamit, Vice President of the World Uyghur Congress, who addressed the ongoing Uyghur Genocide, alongside Mahmut Cömert, President of Yesevi Hareketi, and Abdulhamit Karahan, President of the Uyghur Academy Foundation.

The panel discussion featured distinguished scholars from prominent Turkish universities, including Prof. Dr. Bülent Aksoy (Gazi University), Prof. Dr. Işık Kuşcu Bonnenfant (Middle East Technical University), Prof. Dr. Ragıp Kutay Karaca (Istanbul Aydın University), and Prof. Dr. Ömer Kul (Istanbul University), as well as Abdulhakim Idris, Executive Director of the Center for Uyghur Studies.

Discussions focused on the geopolitical importance of East Turkistan, including its strategic role in China’s geopolitical outlook, its centrality within the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), its significance in regional energy geopolitics, and its place in China’s broader Central Asia policy.

The panel was moderated by Miraç Gür, President of the Yesevi Hareketi Ankara Branch.
